Daniel Murphy

Daniel C. Murphy earned his law degree from the University of Cork in Ireland before preparing independently for the New York Bar Exam. He moved to New York with the goal of representing accident victims, which led him to join McMAHON & McCARTHY. Dan second seated Mr. McMahon during numerous trials. Through this experience, he quickly acquired the skills needed to successfully try cases and has consistently won cases across NYC ever since, including successful appeals. With his charming Irish accent, Mr. Murphy also brings exceptional storytelling abilities and a for connecting with jurors, traits that are in his homeland. In just a few years, he has secured significant verdicts and settlements for clients, notable amounts of $4.2 million and $3.1 million in a single year. Matthew J. McMahon

(1953-2025)

​IN MEMORIAM

With deep respect and profound sadness, we remember the life and legacy of Matthew J. McMahon, a devoted trial attorney, mentor, and advocate whose career spanned over four decades.

Mr. McMahon began trying accident cases in 1984, litigating in both State and Federal Courts in New York, as well as in Connecticut. As a long-standing member of the Board of Directors of the New York Academy of Trial Lawyers, he was widely recognized as a leader and respected voice in the accident and malpractice law community. A proud graduate of St. John’s University School of Law, where he studied on a full academic St. Thomas More Scholarship and contributed as a member of the St. John’s Law Review, Mr. McMahon exemplified legal excellence from the outset of his career.

Over 43 years of practice, he secured numerous million- and multi-million-dollar verdicts and settlements for his clients in complex accident and malpractice cases. His pioneering work led to cases that helped shape legal precedent and were frequently featured in the New York Law Journal. As the founder of New York Torts Weekly, he created a vital resource relied upon by hundreds of attorneys across the metropolitan area.

Beyond the courtroom, Matthew was a passionate educator, commentator, public servant and author. His appearances on television and radio, along with his published works on law and politics, demonstrated his commitment to public understanding of the legal system. He was honored with the New York State Bar President’s Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award for his unwavering dedication to community service, offering free legal guides, lectures, and representation to those in need.

Though he retired from McMahon | McCarthy at the end of 2020, Mr. McMahon continued to share his wisdom and insight with the legal community until his passing. His contributions—both professional and personal—have left an enduring impact. He will be remembered not only for his formidable intellect and legal talent but also for his generosity, humility, and steadfast commitment to justice.
